Reading the language of letters they had received for years
The Starting Point
A couple in their mid-fifties had been receiving CPF annual statements and employer benefit letters for over twenty years. They read the documents each time but came away with the same unease — a sense that they had missed something, without knowing what.
What the Circle Offered
Over four sessions, the glossary chapter on account categories and payout terminology gave them a framework for reading those documents differently. The discussion in each session helped them realise that their confusion was shared — and that the language itself was genuinely dense.
What Changed
They did not leave with a plan. They left with a clearer reading of what they already had. The husband described it as having been handed a dictionary for letters he had read without one.
"We did not make any decisions after the circle. That was not the point. The point was to stop feeling confused every time a statement arrived."

Preparing for a conversation with an employer
The Starting Point
A 58-year-old participant in the corporate sector knew she wanted to reduce her working hours within the next two years but did not know how to read the relevant section of her employment contract or what questions to raise with HR.
What the Programme Offered
The chapter on phased employment vocabulary gave her the language to read her contract more carefully. The session discussion helped her identify which specific terms she had been uncertain about — and that others in the cohort were working through similar questions.
What Changed
She went into a conversation with her HR team three months after the programme ended — not because she was told to, but because the reading had made the conversation feel less uncertain. She described feeling that she knew what the words meant before she got to the meeting.
"The programme did not tell me what to do. But it made me feel that I was reading the situation clearly enough to have the conversation I needed to have."

A couple reading the same map, finally in the same direction
The Starting Point
A couple in their early sixties had been having the same conversation about where to live after retirement for seven years. It always ended in the same place — not quite an agreement, not quite a disagreement, but a general sense of having not finished the conversation.
What the Workshop Offered
The two-day reading and workbook structure gave them a common set of questions to work through together — not answers, but a vocabulary for the geography problem that was specific enough to make the conversation more precise.
What Changed
They described the reflection card as a practical tool — something that gave their ongoing conversations a structure they had not had before. The conversation had not ended. But it had moved forward.
"We came in having the same argument. We left having a different one — a more useful one."
